Emotional & Social Development

At Bowburn Primary School, we are committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive environment where every child feels safe, valued, and supported. We place a high priority on pupil well-being and emotional development, recognising that happy children learn best.

As part of our whole-school approach to emotional well-being, we use the Zones of Regulation framework to help children understand and manage their feelings. This programme teaches pupils to identify their emotions, develop self-regulation strategies, and build resilience. It is embedded across the curriculum and reinforced during:

  • PSHE lessons
  • Circle time
  • Morning registration
  • Classroom routines
  • Nurture sessions

Children learn to recognise which “zone” they are in (Blue, Green, Yellow, or Red) and use tools and strategies to help them return to the optimal “Green Zone” for learning.

Throughout the school day, pupils are encouraged to talk, share, and connect with peers and staff. These interactions help build trusting relationships and a culture of mutual respect and care. Staff use positive reinforcement, rewards, and reflective conversations to support emotional growth.

Our Nurture Unit

We are proud to offer a dedicated Nurture Unit, led by Mrs Walton and Miss Wilson. This calm, quiet space within our school grounds provides:

Access to academic learning in a supportive environment

Emotional and social development programmes

A safe space for children who need additional support to regulate and engage

The Nurture Unit also integrates Zones of Regulation strategies to help children build emotional awareness and coping skills.

We understand that supporting children means supporting families too. Our Parent Support Advisor (PSA), Miss Gates, is available throughout the school day to offer guidance, listen to concerns, and connect families with external services such as:

  • School Nurse
  • One Point
  • Local mental health and wellbeing services

If you would like to speak with Miss Gates, please contact the school office.

IMPACT North East are our School Counsellor service provider. IMPACT NE provide counselling but also many other therapies/social skills groups to support pupils in school. Teachers can refer pupils to work with the counsellors, who will contact parents directly to discuss the service they can provide , and to get to know the parents. Services can also be provided for parents should they request them.

All teachers are available to discuss any concerns you may have. Please contact the school to arrange an appointment or ask to speak to your child’s teacher at the end of the school day.
